It is normal to feel anxious and stressed during this difficult time because things are getting worse, not only in our country but in the whole world, making it difficult for many to stay mentally healthy in these trying times. As the virus continues to spread day by day, the number of positive cases and deaths continues to increase as well.
People all around the world are advised to work-from-home, attend classes online, and stay at the premises of their homes unless absolutely necessary to leave. It is not advisable to go out because we need to protect ourselves, the people around us, and our loved ones from the virus outbreak.
That being said, while it is extremely important and understandable that we are worried about our physical health and nutrition, it is also important that we take care of our mental health as well. As Filipinos, we tend to neglect our mental health; we lack the proper education in understanding enough the importance of our mental health.
The number of people who are experiencing mental health issues and anxiety during this pandemic is increasing each day. We should take this seriously and give proper attention to our mental health. For those who are already experiencing mental health issues, this pandemic can trigger and worsen their physical and psychological state due to the imposed self-isolation, quarantine, separation from loved ones, and physical distancing.
Going to see a mental health expert is not given as much value in this country, and is the least of the concerns of many. Anxiety can lead to depression and depression can lead to death. Anxiety is the anticipation of a future threat. And with what’s happening around us, individuals can develop Specific Phobia or Agoraphobia.
They may be fearful or anxious about two or more of these situations such as using public transportation, being in open or enclosed spaces, standing in line, or being in a crowd or being outside of the home alone.
So if you know someone who needs help, don’t hesitate to lend your ears to listen to them. We all need to listen to one another. Listen and be aware. Now is not the time to be carefree; instead, now is the time to feed our mindsets of the many factors that may impact our mental health.
